If you are uninsured or choose to pay for care without using insurance, you generally have the right to a written estimate of expected healthcare charges.
- Request an estimate before scheduling. It generally must be provided within three business days of your request.
- For care scheduled 3–9 business days ahead, the estimate generally is due within one business day after scheduling. For care scheduled at least 10 business days ahead, it generally is due within three business days.
- Keep your estimate and compare it with your bills. If a provider’s bill is at least $400 above that provider’s estimate, you may use the federal patient-provider dispute process.
